The Maritime Journalists Training Workshop 2024 commenced today at the Apapa Customs Auditorium, with Innocent Orok, Chairman of the Planning Committee, delivering the welcome address.
Orok began by acknowledging the esteemed guests, including the Comptroller General of Customs, BA. Adeniyi MFR; Assistant Comptroller General of Customs, Zone ‘A’, ACG Saidu Yusuf; and Comptroller Dera Nnadi Mni, Customs Area Controller, Tin Can Island Port Command.

The workshop was inspired by a discussion on the Maritime Elders Whatsapp Platform, where Comptroller Dera Nnadi shared an article highlighting challenges in ports and the need for maritime media personnel to take ownership of reporting. Orok responded by emphasizing the importance of training journalists to report accurately on maritime issues.

Orok stressed that maritime journalists deserve training and empowerment, regardless of who initiates or champions it. He noted that this workshop is just the first phase, with subsequent editions planned to benefit all practicing journalists.
