NIMASA Makes Progress in Unraveling Helicopter Crash Mystery: Black Box Found

The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) announced on Sunday that the black box of the helicopter that crashed in Bonny on October 24 has been recovered.

This significant breakthrough was achieved through collaborative efforts with the Nigerian Navy, Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB), NNPCL, HydroDive, and other local and international search and rescue partners.

Recovery Efforts

The recovered black box includes the Flight Data Recorder (FDR) and Cockpit Voice Recorder (CVR) from the Sikorsky SK76 helicopter with registration 5N BQG. Alongside the black box, over 80% of the helicopter wreck has been recovered, including:

•⁠  ⁠Rotor and three blades

•⁠  ⁠Engine and gearbox

•⁠  ⁠Windows and cockpit overhead panels

•⁠  ⁠Electronic Locator Transmitter (ELT)

•⁠  ⁠Tail section

All recovered wreckage is currently stored on a dump barge.

Incident Background

The helicopter, operated by East Winds Aviation, was carrying eight people (six passengers and two crew members) from Port Harcourt to the Floating Production Storage and Offloading (FPSO) Antan oil production facility when it lost contact and crashed into the Atlantic Ocean . Unfortunately, at least three people died in the crash.

Investigation and International Cooperation

NIMASA will share its findings with the International Maritime Organization (IMO) via the Global Integrated Shipping Information System (GISIS), demonstrating Nigeria’s commitment to transparency and cooperation within the global maritime community .

The agency remains dedicated to determining the cause of the incident and preventing future occurrences.

Condolences and Commitment

Dr. Dayo Mobereola, Director General of NIMASA, extended heartfelt condolences to the NNPCL, families of the victims, and those affected by the tragic crash.

He reaffirmed NIMASA’s dedication to safety and its partnership with the Nigerian Navy and other stakeholders to ensure effective emergency response.
