The Nigeria Association of Women Journalists (NAWOJ) recently concluded its National Executive Council (NEC) meeting in Kano State, where members converged to address pressing national issues.
The meeting, presided over by Comrade Aisha Ibrahim Bura, National Chairperson, emphasized the importance of perseverance in the face of economic challenges.
Key Resolutions:
• Gender-Based Advocacies and Empowerment: NAWOJ commended its national, zones, and states for their commendable inputs in promoting gender-based advocacies, empowerment of women and the girl-child, and support for family institutions.
• Journalism Ethics: Members reaffirmed their commitment to upholding the tenets and ethics of journalism practice, including fair hearing, balance, objectivity, and equitability in reportage.
• Support for Female Education: The council commended Senator Oluremi Tinubu’s efforts in supporting female students at the Federal University Dutsinma, Katsina State, and called for sustained initiatives nationwide.
• Agricultural Development: NAWOJ applauded the Kano State First Lady’s agricultural program, which provides farmers with inputs and starter packs, and urged her to continue the initiative.
Urgent Concerns:
• Road Safety: The council expressed deep concerns about the deplorable state of roads, high road accident casualties, and called on governments to prioritize road repair and maintenance.
• Gender-Based Violence: NAWOJ decried the alarming rise in GBV cases and urged governments, traditional institutions, and religious leaders to take decisive action.
• Out-of-School Children: The council condemned the increase in out-of-school children and called on the government to address economic hardship and other root causes.
• Economic Stabilization: NAWOJ urged governments to implement urgent measures to stabilize the economy, reduce inflation, and alleviate economic burden on Nigerians.
Health and Youth Development:
• Regular Medical Check-Ups: The council emphasized the importance of regular medical check-ups to prevent sudden deaths.
• Youth Migration: NAWOJ described the “Japa Syndrome” as a bane to national cohesion, development, and stability, and called for measures to create opportunities for Nigerian youth.
