The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency and the National Hydrographic Agency are stepping up collaboration to boost the adoption of locally produced nautical charts and hydrographic tools, in a bid to strengthen maritime safety and navigation across Nigerian waters.
The pledge was made during a working visit by the Hydrographer of the Nation, Rear Admiral Olumide Fadahunsi, to NIMASA management in Lagos on May 17, 2026.
Rear Admiral Fadahunsi commended NIMASA for its ongoing commitment to maritime safety and development, and assured the agency of continued support in delivering hydrographic services.
He said wider use of locally generated hydrographic data would enhance navigational safety, improve maritime security, and aid the effective management of Nigeria’s territorial waters.
“Hydrography remains a critical component of maritime safety and national development. Strengthening collaboration between the National Hydrographic Agency and NIMASA will enhance navigational safety, improve maritime security, and support sustainable growth within Nigeria’s maritime domain,” he stated.
NIMASA Director General, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said the agency is focused on upgrading its Maritime Safety Information infrastructure, refining enforcement strategies, and expanding capacity building to advance hydrographic services in the country.
He noted that partnership with the National Hydrographic Agency is central to achieving these objectives.
“At NIMASA, we recognize that effective collaboration among maritime institutions is essential to achieving safer and more efficient waterways.
We remain committed to supporting initiatives that strengthen maritime safety, improve operational standards, and enhance the overall growth of Nigeria’s maritime sector,” Mobereola said.
The joint effort is expected to reinforce NIMASA’s mandate under the NIMASA Act to ensure safety of navigation and shipping, particularly through the deployment and enforcement of accurate, up-to-date navigational charts for commercial and coastal operations.
