LAGOS — OCT 4, 2026— The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency, NIMASA, is set to fully automate the Nigerian Ship Registry to modernise services, boost transparency and make the Nigerian flag globally competitive.

The Agency will host a two-part stakeholder webinar on October 6 and 8, 2026, to showcase the new digital platform.

According to NIMASA, the webinars will give shipowners, operators, maritime professionals, financial institutions, insurers and other stakeholders insight into the platform and its potential to drastically improve speed and efficiency of ship registration and related services.

24-Hour Access, Real-Time Mortgage Tracking

The automated system is designed to provide 24-hour access to registration services, streamline application and approval processes, and enable faster issuance of electronic certificates, cutting delays associated with paper-based procedures.

A major feature is secure, real-time tracking of ship mortgages and other registry transactions — a move expected to strengthen transparency and give greater visibility to banks and financiers involved in vessel financing.

The automation will also make interaction with the Nigerian Registry more seamless for local and international shipowners, while strengthening NIMASA’s capacity to provide efficient, globally competitive flag-state services.

Mobereola: Making Nigerian Flag More Attractive

Director-General/CEO of NIMASA, Dr. Dayo Mobereola, said the automation is part of broader efforts to transform the Nigerian flag and create an enabling environment for increased participation in global shipping.

“The automation of the Nigerian Ship Registry represents a significant step in our commitment to providing efficient, transparent and globally competitive services to shipowners and other maritime stakeholders,” Mobereola said.

He added that the objective is to leverage technology to make the Nigerian flag more accessible, responsive and attractive through processes that meet international standards.

NIMASA said the platform is currently undergoing user testing to validate functionality, security and user experience ahead of official deployment.

The webinars will enable stakeholders to understand the platform, experience its key features and provide feedback ahead of full implementation.

Shipowners, ship managers, maritime professionals, financial institutions, insurers, legal practitioners, classification societies and other stakeholders have been invited.

The first webinar holds Tuesday, October 6, 2026, while the second holds Thursday, October 8, 2026. Access link and programme will be released via NIMASA’s official channels.
