The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA) and Chatham House London have agreed to present the issue of maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea to the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) this month.
This decision was made during a meeting between NIMASA Director General Dr. Dayo Mobereola and Chatham House’s Director of the Africa Programme, Dr. Alex Vines.
The meeting aimed to highlight NIMASA’s progress in combating piracy and sea robbery in the region and to develop a position paper on maritime security in the Gulf of Guinea.
The paper will be created in collaboration with international stakeholders from the public and private sectors.
Dr. Mobereola emphasized the importance of international partnership in sustaining security in the Gulf of Guinea, stating that the engagement with the UN Security Council will ensure they are informed about the progress made so far.
He also highlighted the need for an independent analysis of the security situation and its transformation into tangible economic benefits.
Chatham House, a renowned independent analysis and trusted dialogue organization, will collaborate with NIMASA to develop the position paper and provide a catalyst for Nigeria’s Blue Economy development.
