The seized drugs, which included 236,783 bottles of cough syrup containing codeine and Barcadin cough syrup, were packed in 2,174 cartons across four 40ft containers .
Seizure Details
Three containers were seized at APM Terminals, while one was seized at Kachicares Bonded Terminal
The smugglers had expired CSP cough syrup in 34,800 bottles, packed in 174 cartons with 200 bottles per carton .
Another container had 39,700 bottles of DSP cough syrup packed in 100 bottles per carton .
A third container had 19 cartons of CSJ cough syrup with codeine 100ml packed in 200 bottles per carton .
The fourth container had 1,584 cartons of Barcadin cough syrup for throat and chesty cough in 100ml, along with 83 loose bottles.
Comptroller Babatunde Olomu described the seizure as a fallout of the service’s zero tolerance for smuggling .
He warned perpetrators of unlawful trade to steer clear of Apapa Port, emphasizing that customs officers are committed to seamless trade facilitation while maintaining robust anti-smuggling measures
The Risks of Codeine Abuse:
Codeine abuse has been linked to nausea, vomiting, sleepiness, inability to concentrate, and irrational behavior, including criminal tendencies .
The Federal Government banned the importation of codeine cough syrup in 2018 due to its adverse effects on youth .
