The President of Badagry Chamber of Commerce, Industry, Mines, and Agriculture, who was a Customs Officer but retired , Mr. Yahaya Oladiran Idris, has expressed optimism about the proposed deep seaport in Badagry, citing the town’s vast economic potentials and strategic location.
The retired Deputy Comptroller revealed this during his interaction with the executive members of the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria (MARAN) during their two- day retreat programme at the ancient city.
According to Idris, Badagry’s proximity to the ECOWAS and European markets, coupled with its well-developed infrastructure, makes it an ideal location for the deep seaport.
He noted that the port will serve as a transshipment hub for landlocked countries like Niger Republic and Chad, which prefer Nigerian ports for their cargo.
Idris emphasized that the construction of the port will attract investors, create jobs, and boost the local economy. He urged the Federal Government, Lagos State Government, and promoters of the port to resolve outstanding issues and commence construction in 2025.
On concerns about the need for another deep seaport in Badagry, given the existing one in Lekki, Idris argued that the massive market in Lagos justifies the development of the Badagry deep seaport.
In related news, Idris criticized the Federal Government’s decision to close land borders to vehicles, citing revenue losses and the risk of unwarranted deaths among customs officers. He advocated for the reopening of borders to allow vehicles to enter the country.
Idris also emphasized the importance of trade facilitation, urging importers, customs agents, and government agencies to work together to ensure the smooth flow of cargo in and out of ports.
He commended the Nigeria Customs Service, led by Comptroller General Adewale Adeniyi, for prioritizing the welfare of officers and men.
