In a significant breakthrough, the Nigeria Customs Service (NCS) Tincan Island Port Command has handed over illicit drugs worth over N8 billion to the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) .
The seized substances, which include Cannabis Indica and Crystals Methamphetamine, were discovered in two 20-foot containers that were falsely declared to contain used cars and auto spare parts from Canada.
According to Customs Area Controller, Frank Onyeka, the successful interception was made possible through high-level intelligence gathering by NCS officers in collaboration with NDLEA operatives .
Onyeka handed over the seized items to Commander NDLEA, Tincan Island Strategic Command, Mitchell Ofoyeju, during a brief ceremony at the Enforcement Unit of the Tincan Island Port Command.
Breakdown of Seized Consignments
Container 1 (TCNU 194586/1):_ 128 packets of Cannabis Indica, weighing 63.75 kg, with an estimated street value of N414.375 million.
Container 2 (MSMU 838666/3):_ 97 packets of Crystals Methamphetamine, weighing 78.3 kg, with an estimated street value of N2 billion, and 1,735 packets of Cannabis Indica, weighing 867.5 kg, with an estimated street value of N5.638 billion.
The total street value of the seized drugs stands at N8.053 billion ³. Onyeka emphasized that these seizures demonstrate the Command’s commitment to safeguarding the nation from the menace of illicit drugs, while also facilitating trade and maintaining national security and public health .
