The Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria (MWUN) has elected Comrade Francis Bunu as its new President General, marking the beginning of a new era in the union’s leadership.
This development took place at the union’s 6th Delegates Conference held in Lagos, where Bunu emerged unopposed as the President General.
Bunu, who previously served as the Deputy President General of the union, brings over 24 years of experience as a seasoned seafarer to his new role.
He has worked onboard various vessels both within Nigeria and internationally, and has been a prominent figure within the MWUN leadership.
The new President General has pledged to build on the legacies of his predecessor, Comrade Adewale Adeyanju, and has called on industry stakeholders to collaborate with the union to take it to even greater heights.
He also announced Adeyanju as the new Board of Trustees (BoT) of MWUN, in line with the union’s Constitution.
The event was attended by top dignitaries in the maritime industry, including the Minister of Marine and Blue Economy, Adegboyega Oyetola, and the Director General of the Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency (NIMASA), Dr. Dayo Mobereola.
Other newly elected national officers include Comrade Robert Eze as National Auditor, Obidoma David as National Trustee, and Mukhaila Lawal as Treasurer, among others.
The union also unveiled a book titled “The History of Maritime Workers Union of Nigeria, 1996-2024,” which generated over N52 million in support.
