The Customs Officers’ Wives Association (COWA) has officially launched its Green Borders Sustainability Initiative (CGBSI) with a flag-off ceremony at Seme Border Town, Lagos State.
The event marked the beginning of a nationwide environmental sustainability campaign aimed at greening communities and promoting sustainable development.
Speaking at the ceremony, COWA National President, Mrs. Kikelomo Adeniyi, described the initiative as “a movement of hope, responsibility, and transformation that connects our homes, our borders, and our planet.”
She highlighted the success of the recent COWA Green Borders and Sustainability Summit, which laid the foundation for the Green Borders campaign and unveiled the COWA Sustainability & Innovation Centre.
Highlights:
Tree Planting: Over 5,000 trees will be planted across Nigeria’s border regions.
Training and Empowerment: More than 1,000 women and youths will be trained in recycling and green enterprise.
Solar-Powered Eco-Hubs: Solar-powered eco-hubs will be established across Nigeria’s border regions.
Community Engagement: Monthly “Clean Border Days” will be observed to sustain the initiative.
The event featured tree planting, community clean-ups, waste segregation demonstrations, and recycling hub training. Youths and market women participated actively, pledging to sustain the initiative.
Mrs. Adeniyi announced that COWA will host a special Side Event at the Nigerian Pavilion during COP 30, the United Nations Climate Change Conference, on November 17, 2025, in Belém, Brazil.
She invited all Nigerian delegates, development partners, and stakeholders attending COP 30 to join COWA at the Nigerian Pavilion to witness firsthand how Nigerian women are leading climate action from the grassroots to the global stage.
The COWA Green Border Day will continue with similar events nationwide over the next year, culminating in the presentation of a National Green Borders Impact Report and commissioning of the Centre at the next COWA Green Borders and Sustainability Summit.
