The Nigerian Maritime Administration and Safety Agency has commended the Maritime Reporters Association of Nigeria for its professionalism and pledged stronger collaboration on media training to drive awareness of Nigeria’s blue economy opportunities.
NIMASA made the call on Monday while receiving the newly elected MARAN executives on their first official visit to the agency’s headquarters in Lagos. The delegation was received by Deputy Director, Public Relations, Mr. Osagie Edward, and senior officials of the department.
The meeting opened with MARAN President conveying the association’s condolences to NIMASA over the death of staff member Ifenyinwa Okonkwo, who passed away over the weekend. He prayed for the repose of her soul and for strength for her family and colleagues.
MARAN said the visit was aimed at deepening the cordial relationship built with NIMASA over two decades and securing more structured capacity development for maritime journalists to improve industry reporting.
Responding with appreciation, Edward congratulated the new executives and described their election as a reflection of members’ confidence.
He acknowledged MARAN’s role since the era of physical press releases to today’s digital media landscape.
“We have known MARAN for over 20 years… You are now leading a digital MARAN and I encourage you to build on the achievements of your predecessors,” he said.
Edward said the media is strategic to projecting Nigeria’s blue economy and attracting investment.
“The Nigerian blue economy presents enormous opportunities. If the sector is properly projected and branded, the world will become more aware of the potentials we have and investors will come seeking opportunities. This will ultimately benefit the country,” he stated.
He noted that Director-General Dr. Dayo Mobereola is leading efforts to position Nigeria as a global maritime leader, adding that “we can only achieve it by working together in the interest of the country.”
On MARAN’s request for training, Edward assured the association that capacity building remains a priority for NIMASA management and discussions on media training opportunities are already ongoing.
Assistant Director, Public Relations, Daniel Kajo, also urged MARAN members to uphold journalistic ethics, embrace constructive criticism, and ensure reports are factual, objective, and focused on national development.
Both parties reaffirmed commitment to stronger collaboration on information sharing, professional development, and promotion of Nigeria’s maritime and blue economy agenda.
